The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) called on the member states of the Council, including Moldova, to take action to fight any kind of violence against women, Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovich said in her report on the participation of the Moldovan Parliament’s delegation in the ordinary sessions of the PACE in 2015, IPN reports.
In the February 26 sitting of Parliament, Liliana Palihovici said that a subject discussed by the PACE as a matter of urgency was the attacks on women in several EU towns before the New Year. These cases raised the subject of sexual violence and sexism. The violence against women was classed as one of the most serious human rights violations.
It was noted that when each third victim of violence is a woman, this problem can no longer be ignored. It was also noted that the mass media bear great responsibility for reporting cases of violence without allowing stigmatization. The PACE voted a resolution by which the member states of the Council of Europe are asked to take measures to prevent and combat violence against women.
Another report presented in the sessions focused on the states’ responsibility for protecting human rights defenders. Liliana Palihovici said the report covered Moldova too. It was recommended avoiding measures that could restrict the human rights defenders in their acts. “I delivered a speech and spoke about the human rights defenders in the Transnistrian region and related about “Promo-LEX,” stated the Deputy Speaker.
Liliana Palihovici noted that another report referred to corruption fighting. It was said that the population of Moldova has a low level of confidence in the rule of law institutions.
At the beginning of March, Parliament is to choose a new delegation that will represent Moldova in the ordinary sessions of the PACE this year.
