The PACE Sub-Committee on the Election of Judges to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has accepted the list of candidates proposed by the Government of Moldova for the vacant post of ECHR judge. The list includes practicing lawyers Valeriu Gritco and Mihail Buruiana, as well as Deputy Justice Minister Vladimir Grosu, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Moldovan Ministry of Justice said in a press release that the list was presented by Justice Minister Oleg Efrim. The PACE Sub-Committee will decide whether the lists submitted by the Council of Europe member countries meet the selection criteria.
The candidates proposed by Moldova were accepted despite objections that the list included only men, with the presence of at least one woman being recommended as a proof of respect for gender equality. The Sub-Committee verified and ascertained that the national selection procedure met the rules prescribed by the CoE's Committee of Ministers.
On September 30 the candidates will be interviewed by the Sub-Committee and the final decision will be made in October within the framework of the Parliamentary Assembly's plenary session, where the representatives of all member countries will elect by a simple majority one of the three candidates.
