Clothes and images from the front cover of the Latvian fashion magazine “Rigas Modes” were displayed at the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History in Chisinau. The exhibition was mounted by the Embassy of Latvia in Moldova and presents pages from the history of Latvian fashion, IPN reports.
Latvia’s charge d’affaires in Chisinau Vita Dobele said the exhibition presents accomplishments of Latvian fashion designers who worked in the period between 1950 and present. “It may seem surprising, but the Latvian ethnical models and traditional clothes have always been in vogue. In the exhibition, you will find a traditional element – the so-called ‘tree-sun’, which is a version of the tree of the world that can be found in the mythology of different countries,” stated Vita Dobele.
The exhibition consists of two parts: historical data about fashion and elements of current fashion brands. “The exhibition aims to speak about fashion by presenting simultaneously Latvian society of the last 60 years, starting with 1948, when the Riga Fashion House was founded. We also wanted to present contemporary Latvian designers,” said Vita Dobele.
According to the Museum’s scientific secretary Varvara Buzila, this exhibition is absolutely necessary for the museum space of Moldova. “The museum space belongs to all the thinkers and opinion shapers and a good idea is a powerful trump card for these,” she stated.
Varvara Buzila noted that Latvia remains faithful to its natural spirit and this is what defines it in what it does, including in fashion. Latvian fashion knew in time very rhythmic pulsations, but managed to keep the national values of the Latvians.
The exhibition “Let’s speak about fashion. Latvia and the fashion from the 1950s until now” will continue until July 26.
