On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women that is celebrated on the initiative of the UN on November 25, Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu reiterated the authorities’ commitment to have zero tolerance for any form of violence, IPN reports.
“The supporting and promotion of women, including the ensuring of an environment free from domestic violence, are among the current government’s priorities. I’m glad that during the first 100 days of mandate, the PAS parliamentary group voted for the ratification of the Council of Europe Convention for preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence,” Igor Grosu stated at the beginning of the November 25 sitting of Parliament.
He noted that the shameful phenomenon of violence should be past history as such tragedies are unacceptable in the 21st century.
In connection with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Moldova’s Parliament hosts an event to launch the campaign “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence”.
A study carried out by the Women’s Law Center shows that violence against women is rarely reported to the police and other organizations as there is lack of trust in the institutions that should provide support and services to victims. Shame, fear of the perpetrator, and lack of long-term and practical support, such as housing and financial assistance, are obstacles that prevent women from reporting domestic violence incidents. In 2020, authorities were notified in 12,970 cases of domestic violence, with over 1,100 more cases than in 2019 and with almost 2,000 more cases than in 2018.
