The proposal of the Traffic Police to make passenger transporters install video surveillance and safety belts for passengers will be included in the new Code of Land Transportation, Info-Prim Neo learned from Deputy Minister of Transports and Infrastructure Boris Gherasim. The bill is being finalized and will be submitted to the Government for approval in September, and then to the Parliament. Head of the Traffic Police Serghei Diaconu is confident that safety belts and video surveillance would reduce the number of road accidents and will save human lives. According to Diaconu, if the passengers of the bus involved in the tragic accident in Ungheni had their safety belts on, many lives would have been saved. According to the head of the Traffic Police, the footage of video cameras installed in public transport will show if the legal norms of passenger transportation and speed limits are respected. According to the estimations of some bus transporters, a safety belt would cost about 50 lei. Thereby, for a bus with 46-55 seats, the costs would rise to 3000 lei.
