More than 500 persons in Moldova suffer from kidney failure and are potential beneficiaries of kidney transplant, while more than 70 persons were put on the waiting list for liver transplant. In Europe Square in central Chisinau, the Transplant Agency staged an information event on the occasion of the National Donor Day, encouraging passersby to support the donation of organs and tissue, IPN reports.
The Agency’s vice director Grigore Romanciuc said the Republic of Moldova is in an endemic zone for viral hepatites B and C, which gradually lead to hepatic cirrhosis and ultimately to transplant. The Moldovans are now more receptive when someone needs transplant, especially because this is now possible in the country.
Grigore Romanciuc noted that the area develops and heart and cardio-pulmonary transplantations could also be performed in Moldova. “We have specialists and equipment, but need to know step by step how to perform that heart transplant,” he stated.
Last year, there were performed nine liver transplants and 22 kidney transplants. As many as 11 liver transplants and 17 kidney transplants have been performed so far this year. Moldova has a specialized transplant center and 16 centers authorized to collect and transplant tissue.
