Former political detainee Ion Moraru Friday launched a memory book that contains three volumes that appeared earlier – “Desolation”, “Stages of Hell”, and “The Girl Smelling of Basil”. During the launch, the author related his past sufferings with tears in his eyes, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Ion Moraru thanked those who helped him publish the book, saying the new generations must read this book and know what their grandparents and great-grandparents went through.
Elena Vulpe, director of the Library “Onisifor Ghibu”, where the launch took place, said that Ion Moraru is a very honorable person, a model and a guide, while the book represents homage rendered to those who survived the hell. “He went through deportation, famine, collectivization, but managed to preserve the faith and love,” said Elena Vulpe.
Historian Ion Turcanu said the book impressed him and it represents a belletristic sample as well as a historical document that contains nice pages. He stated that the described examples are impressive and very relevant. “If Mister Moraru had started to write earlier, he would have been one of the best prose writers of Moldova,” he said.
Poet, writer and former political detainee Boris Marian said the launch is a very important event. “I did not know that there was a person among us who can be named and I name him a great writer,” he said, adding that Ion Moraru’s work should be translated into Russian and English so that as many people as possible could read it.
At the end of the launch, all those attending received by a book with the author’s autograph.
Ion Moraru was born in Mandac, Drochia on March 9, 1929. He was one of the founders of the anti-Soviet group “Sword of Justice” and a political prisoner in the Soviet period.
