Members and supporters of the Party of Communists, as well as war veterans, laid flowers today at the “Eternitate” (“Eternity”) Memorial Compound in Chisinau, marking 68 years from the Iasi-Chisinau operation, reports Info-Prim Neo.
PCRM leader Vladimir Voronin stated that 68 years ago, a useless war was happening, the guilt of which falls on the politicians. According to Voronin, those who say that 68 years ago the Moldovan territory was occupied by Soviets, and not freed from fascists, are pursuing their own interests. “Historians and commentators are simply paid to give such statements”, the Communist leader remarked.
Russian Ambassador to Chisinau Farid Mukhametshin also laid flowers at the memorial. Vladimir Voronin and Farid Mukhametshin talked for several minutes, away from the press’ reach. The PCRM plans on organizing another meeting, at the Serpeni plateau, where the bloodiest battles of those times were held.
On August 24, 1994, the Soviet troops defeated the German-Romanian forces in the fight for the territory between Prut and Nistru, called the Iasi-Chisinau operation, the Soviet army, thus, regaining control over Moldova’s territory.
