Moldova’s Ambassador to Italy Aurel Baiesu, who was proposed by the Democratic Party (PDM) for the post of Constitutional Court judge, will come to Chisinau next week to hold discussions with the parliamentary factions, IPN reports.

The bill on the appointment of Aurel Baiesu as judge of the Constitutional Court was included in the agenda of the March 29 sitting of Parliament, but wasn’t debated for the reason that Baiesu is not in the country. The lawmakers said a constitutional judge cannot be named by correspondence.

PDM leader Marian Lupu described this argument as groundless. The legislation does not provide that the person must attend the sitting when the appointment to post is decided. “The person must be present at the swearing-in ceremony,” he stressed.

The Democratic leader said Aurel Baiesu was one of the best candidates for this post. “Mister Baiesu is a good specialist in constitutional law. There are probably other reasons why he wasn’t voted today. We will see the reaction of the colleagues after meditation,” stated Marian Lupu.

On March 29, Parliament named Liberal MP Victor Popa as Constitutional Court judge by 51 votes in favor. He will be sworn in on April 4. The legislature is to elect one more constitutional judge.
