Members of the initiative group for creating the People’s Council-2 said two large-scale events aimed at initiating Bessarabia’s union with Romania will take place on March 27, when the union was voted the first time 98 years ago. Thus, the People’s Council-2, which is the representative forum of the unionists, will be held in the first half of the day. It will bring together over 1,700 delegates from all the villages and towns of Moldova, representatives of the unionist diaspora and invitees from Romania. A large march will be mounted on the main artery of Chisinau in the second half of the day.
In a news conference at IPN, the organizers said the People’s Council-2 is staged in Chisinau based on the Council convened in 1918. The congress will center on economic and legal aspects, the energy interconnection and the reunion with Romania. Coordinator of the National Unity Block Constantin Codreanu, who is a member of the initiative group, said the People’s Council-2 won’t be a platform for debates only. It will be a working body as well.
“This means that the People’s Council-2 will include commissions based on the models of the Parliaments of Moldova and Romania. For example, there will be the law commission, the commission on economy and finance, the commission on education and others,” said Constantin Codreanu. According to him, each of these commissions will deal with the formulation of strategies, documents and official positions that will be presented to the public opinion, the authorities of Moldova and Romania and representatives of international organizations.
Writer Nicolae Dabija, who was a member of the National Union Council of 1991, said the congress of March 27 will involve by a resident of each of the country’s settlements. “We want this body to be representative. At the same time, the People’s Council can become a union body, a working body. In this respect, concrete work should be done on plans that will bring Moldova and Romania closer so that we are united in 2018,” he stated.
As to the march, the head of the unionist movement “Moldova’s Youth” Anatol Ursu said the event starts at 1pm. The column will set off from the square of the National Opera House “Maria Biesu”, will move along Stefan cel Mare si Sfant Blvd and will stop in the square of the Railway Terminal. The organizers expect that the march will involve over 50,000 people as this is the largest march organized ever in Chisinau. “There are a number of visual surprises intended for those who will take part and we have a very simple and clear message - Moldova’s Youth want better living conditions for all the people of Moldova and this objective can be achieved by reuniting with Romania,” he stated.
The chairman of the 1992 War Veterans Association “Tiras-Tighina” Anatolie Caraman assured that public order will be maintained during the events that will be staged on March 27. “We are firmly convinced that immediately after the border from the Prut River is removed, the economy between the Prut and the Nistru will grow, as the number of unionists grows now,” he said.
On March 27, 2016, it will be 98 years since the People’s Council voted in favor of Bessarabia’s union with Romania. After the union, Bessarabia kept its autonomy and had its own legislative body.
