The People’s Party of the Republic of Moldova (PPRM) will stage protests because the subsidies promised by the Government are not paid to farmers. The announcement was made by the party’s co-chairman Valeriu Cosarciuc in a news conference on October 23, IPN reports.

Valeriu Cosarciuc, who is also the president of the Farmers Union of Moldova, said the subsidization fund was used up, while the farmers who submitted applications for subsidies will receive at most 10% of the asked sum. “We possess information that a scheme to appropriate money from the agriculture subsidization fund by increasing the subsidies for some of the farmers is being used. The money is thus used up quickly and is directed to particular functionaries. This scheme involves a person from Poland. We already submitted corroborative documents to the law reinforcement bodies,” he stated.

The leader of the PPRM referred also to the apple crisis, saying a cartel agreement exists between the Government and fruit processors. “The Government encourages the low purchase prices set by the canneries and pretends to be offering support to farmers. The support promised to the farmers who sustained damages as a result of Russia’s ban was reduced to levels that cannot cover these losses at least closely,” said Valeriu Cosarciuc.

He made it clear that the subsidies of 500 million lei that were to be given to farmers could be used by the ruling parties in the current election campaign.
