The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola, who was heading for Molovata Noua village of Dubasari district to take part in the inauguration of the office of family doctors that was reconstructed with European funds wasn’t allowed to enter the Transnistrian region.
Contacted by IPN, mayor of Molovata Noua Valeriu Sandul confirmed that the diplomat was unable to come to the event, but could not say the reasons why Pirkka Tapiola had to go back. Though Molovata Noua, which is located on the left side of the Nistru, is administered by the Moldovan constitutional authorities, one can get to the village either by the ferry or through a Transnistrian checkpoint.
“The EU official was to take part in a ceremony in Molovata Noua in connection with the opening of an office of family doctors, whose reconstruction was financed by the EU and UNDP. He arrived at the Transnistrian customs, but I cannot say what happened there. I know that he had to go back. We regret that the ambassador wasn’t present at the inauguration,” said the mayor.
The EU Delegation avoided commenting on the incident.
