The Liberal parliamentary faction registered a bill providing for the abrogation of the amendments made to the Election Code on May 3, by which the students were banned from voting in the settlement where they study if they do not have the domicile there. The PLDM also registered a bill aimed at simplifying the voting procedure for students, IPN reports.
Liberal MP Valeriu Munteanu told a news conference that the amendments adopted by the PLDM and PCRM on May 3 abusively restrict the right of these people. “The intentions are not democratic and the changes aren’t aimed at improving the electoral system” he stated.
In a communiqué, the PLDM says there are over 120,000 young people in Moldova who study in other settlements than those where they live. Voting conditions should be created for them. “The improvements proposed to the Election Code will enable the school and university students to vote based on relevant documents at any polling place established in the settlement where they study by filling out a statement, pledging to abstain from multiple voting,” said the PLDM.
The same bill provides that the electoral offices can decide to extend the voting period by at most two hours as to as allow the queuing up voters to exercise this fundamental right.
