The Liberal Party (PL) will boycott the November 19 referendum on the dismissal of Dorin Chirtoaca from the post of mayor general of Chisinau municipality. In a news conference, the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu read an appeal that was adopted in an extended meeting of the party’s bureau held in the evening of September 26. By this the party calls on the people not to take part in the plebiscite so that this could not be validated, IPN reports.
“Dorin Chirtoaca didn’t become involved in political games and didn’t want to become someone’s marionette and thus pays for this. In the period, Chisinau went on and developed. Only those who do not have eyes do not see how Chisinau changed during Dorin Chirtoaca’s terms in office,” stated Mihai Ghimpu.
The PL calls on all the pro-European and pro-democratic political parties to support their approach and urge their supporters to boycott the referendum initiated by the Socialists, which is tacitly supported by the PDM-PSRM government. Mihai Ghimpu addressed those who intend to take part in the referendum, especially the supporters of the Socialists, saying they are used by the Democratic leader Vlad Plahotniuc in his plans to gain control of Chisinau. “The Socialists must understand that they will not have their mayor at the City Hall,” stated the Liberal leader.
Mihai Ghimpu noted that both the referendum and the starting of criminal cases against Liberal heavyweights form part of a struggle against the PL’s firm position in relation to the government and against the unionism promoted in Moldova. “We cannot stop this referendum by going to the Constitutional Court, but we can stop it by non-participation,” he said.
