The PLDM group will put forward to the Parliament a draft amendment to the Constitution for canceling the immunity enjoyed by MPs. PLDM group leader Valeriu Strelet called on his alliance colleagues and on the opposition to support the initiative. A constitutional amendment needs 61 votes to pass, Info-Prim Neo reports. The bill to annul the MPs’ immunities was developed last year, was approved by the Constitutional Court and signed by 31 PLDM and 4 PL lawmakers. “It’s been six months since the approval of the Constitutional Court and we are intent on starting the parliamentary procedure regarding this bill. Four weeks ago, we called on our colleagues from the Alliance for European Integration during an extended meeting. They had enough time to think things over. Considering that they still hesitate to sign the bill, we’ll make use of the public way to collect the signatures”, said Strelet. He argues that a genuine struggle against corruption isn’t possible if the MP immunity is kept in the form it’s currently protected by the Constitution. The PLDM group leader said that this goal was included in the Government Program adopted in January 2011. “We consider that both the alliance members and the opposition, which often accuses some MPs of corruption, should be vitally interested in promoting this initiative”. Liberal MP Valeriu Munteanu told Info-Prim Neo that PL would support the bill as it had already signed it. PDM group leader Dumitru Diacov said that the Democrats didn’t discuss the matter and would make public their position later. Communist MP Artur Resetnicov said that the Communists were unlikely to support the initiative, as many of their proposals had been rejected and the alliance must answer for banning Communist symbols.
