The police have started an investigation and are taking actions to collect evidence, under the supervision of prosecutors, in connection with the recent fires that broke out at Giurgiulesti Port. Depending on the preliminary conclusions, the course of action will be decided. According to the General Police Inspectorate, the recurrent fires at the silos in the port of Giurgiulesti endanger critical infrastructure of national importance and security in the border area.
The Ministry of the Interion will request the Extraordinary Situations Commission to examine the situation in order to take special measures to protect critical infrastructures and the environment. “The MoI draws attention to the imminent danger to critical infrastructure of national and strategic importance that may be affected due to the repeated occurrence of perilous events, today being the fifth time the IGSU fire squads had to intervene on a silo with agricultural products”, a press release said.
The Minister of the Interior, accompanied by a team of specialists from the IGSU and the IGPF, visited the site. “These repeated fires occur in a sensitive area. There is a strategic node for the economy and security of our country, because at Giurgiulesti, three countries meet, one of them being at war. Due to the risk of explosion and pollution, international relations may be affected. Let me stress that there is an increased potential for risk because the structures affected by the fires can destroy the railway infrastructure located near these warehouses, which would block port activity. In addition, there is an imminent danger related to the transport of flammable materials by rail, since there are fuel depots near the silos, and the movement of these goods is by rail. Because of this, there is an increased risk of explosion”, Minister Ana Revenco said.
To secure the area and for any potential immediate intervention, a permanent surveillance post was set up.
