The people’s confidence in the police increased considerably after reforms were launched at the Ministry of the Interior, Minister Dorin Recean said in the program “Fourth Power” of N4 TV channel.

However, the minister admits that there is yet a lot of work to be done, especially for restoring the people’s respect for the police. “We took over from the former Communist government a totalitarian militia system that didn’t contain the notion of human rights,” said Recean.

He also said that the police reform now centers on three directions: strengthening of human capacity by continually training police officers, improvement of infrastructure, and ensuring of integrity.

Another important task in the work of the police is to change the working methods and to implement modern methods in discovering crimes. The police managed to solve a number of rather difficult serious crimes by using advanced technology.

As regards ensuring of integrity, the Ministry of the Interior includes a special structure designed to identify corrupt police officers. Remarkable results were already achieved in the fight against corruption after surveillance cameras were installed on the streets of Chisinau, stated Dorin Recean.

He added that former and even current employees of the Ministry of the Interior criticize the reform because they felt better in the old corrupt and totalitarian system.
