Representatives of political parties express differing opinions about the referendum to dismiss Dorin Chirtoaca from the post of mayor general of Chisinau municipality. The Liberals consider the voters transmitted an important message against the removal of Dorin Chirtoaca, while the Socialists believe the Democratic Party and its leader are those that actually benefitted from the referendum. The issue was developed in the talk show “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports.

Deputy chairman of the Liberal Party Valeriu Munteanu said the residents of Chisinau municipality transmitted a very important signal. The inhabitants of the capital city gained as a result of the local referendum. They defended the capital from the Socialists and this is their merit. “We will make effort for Dorin Chirtoaca to return to the City Hall in the nearest future and to continue his duties, as the citizens decided last Sunday,” he stated.

Socialist MP Grigore Novac said the Democratic Party and its leader Vlad Plahotniuc actually benefitted from the November 19 referendum because their ‘protégée’ Silvia Radu will continue to head the municipality.

Ilian Casu, deputy head of “Our Party”, said that if the residents of Chisinau had supported Dorin Chirtoaca indeed, they would have taken part in the referendum and would have voted against his dismissal.

Deputy head of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Mihai Popusoi noted the November 19 referendum was the result of a political arrangement between the Democratic Party and the Party of Socialists. Furthermore, the Democratic Party provided logistical support for holding the referendum. “They took care for Mister Chirtoaca to be ‘locked’ up to the last week,” stated Mihai Popusoi.

The turnout at the referendum on the dismissal of Dorin Chirtoaca from the post of mayor general of Chisinau municipality on November 19 was 17.54%. The minimum required turnout for a referendum to be validated is 33.3%.
