Almost 96% of the questionnaires completed during the population and housing census taken in 2014 were processed, director general of the National Bureau of Statistics Vitalie Valcov said in a meeting with Prime Minister Pavel Filip, who visited the Bureau on the occasion of the Professional Day of Statisticians, IPN reports.
Vitalie Valcov stated that the introduction of data into the specialized information system will be completed by the end of this October, which is two months before the deadline set by the National Commission for the Population and Housing Census of 2014. Afterward, the data will be verified and prepared for publication so that the final results become available by next March.
Pavel Filip said the procedures for processing the census data were delayed, while the money allocated for the purpose was used irrationally. It would have been more efficient if modern information technology had been used from the very first stages of the census. Some of the chiefs that managed the process didn’t realize that digitization means not inclusion of data from the paper questionnaire by hand, but by using devices that can save time and resources.
In this connection, the Premier assured that the Government will pay increased attention to this area so as to really modernize it and the previous mistakes are not repeated in the next census planned for 2020. “A society cannot be called modern if it does not put its data in order. The Government will offer the necessary assistance for the National Bureau of Statistics to provide statistical services of a high quality,” said Pavel Filip.
