Net migration of the population with habitual residence follows the growth trend of recent years, registering a negative value of minus 63,600 people in 2022, the National Bureau of Statistics has said. The people up to 19 years constituted 39% of those who left, being followed by the population aged 20-39 years, whose share is 32%, IPN reports.
Net migration is calculated based on data on state border crossings by individuals for three consecutive years: previous, current and next. Thus, net migration for 2022 was estimated based on data for 2021, 2022 and 2023. The data on the international migration of the population with habitual residence in 2023 will be calculated when the information on the state border crossings in 2024 will become available.
The situation is similar in the case of immigrants. The people aged up to 19 years old represented about 39% of the total number of immigrants, while those aged 20-39 held a share of 26% of the total.
As for internal migration, according to data provided by the Public Services Agency, 20,100 people changed their domicile inside the country in 2023. Mostly, internal migrants are people of working age (97%), predominantly of the 20-49 age bracket. The flow of arrivals/departures from the gender perspective was 57.3% women and 42.7% men.
In 2023, due to internal migration, the population in urban localities increased by 4,700 people at the expense of rural localities. Most of the internal migrants chose large cities. 48.4% of the total went to the municipality of Chisinau, which is followed by the municipality of Balti with 3.7%.
