The Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment called on the citizens to give up burning tires on Easter night. Specialists warn that when tires are burned, over 20 dangerous substances are emitted in the atmosphere and many of these are carcinogenic, IPN reports.

“In the past, they used wood for Easter bonfires. Now the people burn mainly tires. Thus, the “purification” aspect turned into a pollution one given that the substances emitted as a result of burning are very noxious,” the Ministry said in a press release.

Specialists warn that the inhaling of black smoke is dangerous as this can cause bronchitis, asthma, pulmonary poisoning or diseases of the nervous system. The dioxins accumulate in plants, animal, fish and human tissues. Depending on the intensity of wind, the noxious substances can be dispersed at distances of over 160 km.

Under the Contravention Code, the pollution of atmospheric air is punished with a fine of 2,000 to 3,000 lei. Environmental inspectors, together with police officers, will monitor the observance of the environmental legislation will impose penalties, if necessary.
