The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launched a commemorative postage stamp in Chisinau on the occasion of its 60th anniversary, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The Refugee Convention was adopted in 1951 to help 2.1 million Europeans uprooted by World War Two. Today nearly 44 million people are displaced worldwide,” said Peter Kessler, UNHCR Representative to Moldova. “UNHCR’s work now extends to more than 125 countries and encompasses people forced to flee across borders as well as those in flight within their own countries.” According to Peter Kessler, since commencing work in Moldova in 1997, UNHCR has spent nearly $20 million to help the government care for refugees and establish necessary laws and procedures. Vice director general of Moldova’s postal service “Posta Moldovei” Ludmila Buzu said it is not for the first time that “Posta Moldovei” cooperates with the UNCHR in Moldova. A postage stamp printed in Germany was launched in 2001. The stamp marking the 60th anniversary of the UN refugee agency represents two hands that protect people of different nationalities and races.
