Tariffs on the postal services provided by the state-owned company “Posta Moldovei” (“Moldova’s Post Office”) will rise by 30% on average, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a decision approved by the Government. “The adjustment of the postal charges is necessary as the prices of electric power, fuel and spare parts increased. At the same time, most of the technological processes for providing postal services are performed manually and the remuneration is the basic component of the tariff,” explained Minister of Information and Communication Technology Pavel Filip. Thus, the new charges for letters sent by mail that weigh between 20 and 500 grams will rise by 30% and will vary between 1.75 and 6.5 lei. The charges for letters heavier than 500 grams will remain unchanged and will vary between 11 and 22 lei. The new charge for delivering postcards will be 1.3 lei, for Loco postcards – 1 leu. The delivering of printed matter will cost from 1.2 lei for an item of up to 20 grams to 17 lei for an item of 2,000 grams. The 50% concessions on printed matter that is sent to libraries and that contains periodicals for children will be kept. The charges will be identical for private individuals and legal entities. The minister said that about 90% of the national letters are letters sent by economic entities and only approximately 10% are letters sent by private individuals. According to Pavel Filip, the charges on letter delivery and other services are now much lower than their cost price. Therefore, “Posta Moldovei” sustained losses of over 10 million lei in 2011. This year the losses are projected to come to about 17 million lei. In most of the CIS countries where the economic situation of the postal sector is comparable to that of Moldova, the main postal charges are higher than in Moldova: in Russia - 4 times, in Georgia - over 6 times, while in Ukraine – 2.5 times. The new charges will come into force on December 1, after the decision is published in the Official Gazette, but not earlier than in 15 days after publication.
