The European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM) filed a challenge to the Constitutional Court by which it demands that the Law on the Status of Chisinau Municipality should be declared unconstitutional. The PPEM considers the recently adopted law runs counter to the Constitution and to the principle of local self-government and holding of office of local elected official until the end of term without being limited in powers, IPN reports.
“This law also denies the votes given by the residents of Chisinau municipality in the local elections of June 14, 2015 for their representatives on the Chisinau Municipal Council, while the voting of this law under the pressure of the Liberal Party shows once again that the parliamentary alliance is guided by other interests than those that are nicely packed in the pro-reform rhetoric,” said the leader of the PPEM Iurie Leanca.
Earlier, members of the PPEM and the Party of Socialists called on President Nicolae Timofti not to promulgate the Law on the Status of Chisinau Municipality that was passed by Parliament on June 17.
