The Political Bureau of the People’s Party of Moldova (PPRM) is launching a campaign to collect signatures in support of amending the Constitution so that the head of state is elected by direct vote. The announcement was made by the managing co-chairman of the PPRM Alexandru Oleinic in a news conference, IPN reports.
“We sit less in armchairs and travel more through the country. The people say they want to elect the President themselves. A politically elected head of state cannot be independent. These actions are a real necessity for the current political situation,” said Alexandru Oleinic.
The PPRM’s Political Bureau also pleads for the immediate investiture of a technocratic Government. “The political crisis of the last few years showed that the country needs a President elected by the people, not the politicians. In many European countries, only the technocratic governments took the country out of difficulties. This is the only solution for overcoming the current crisis,” said Oleinic.
He also said that the agreements between the PLDM and PCRM can lead to the usurpation of democracy and the rule of law. “They tried to remove the Constitutional Court judges and limited the people’s representation in Parliament by increasing the election threshold, going against the recommendations made by the Venice Commission in 2008,” stated Alexandru Oleinic, adding that 2013 must be the year when Moldova will come closer to the EU.
Within the campaign “You elect the President”, the PPRM will collect signatures from all over the country. The signatures will be submitted to the Central Election Commission.
