Prime Minister Vlad Filat congratulated the journalists on World Press Freedom Day, wishing them success and new accomplishments. “Our country made certain progress in promoting honest and unbiased journalism, but there is yet a lot of work to be done,” the Premier says in a press statement, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
Vlad Filat said that our society, which is involved in a broad transformation process, now needs a truly free and independent press that will correctly inform the people about the important developments in the country. “Therefore, the Government of Moldova supports the journalists who lay emphasis on professionalism, debates and exchanges of ideas with representatives of civil society, on honesty and courage,” he stated.
According to the Premier, press freedom unites the people in promoting the democratic principles, encourages independent thinking, and favors the development of a healthy society that acts responsibly and consciously.
Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, World Press Freedom Day is an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, evaluate press freedom, defend the media from attacks on their independence and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
