Preparations for 25th anniversary of withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan underway

The Government instituted an organizational committee for staging activities on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the withdrawal of the military troops from Afghanistan in 2014. Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Potang was named as head of the committee, while among its members are the National Army General Staff chief Igor Gorgan, adviser to the Prime Minister Ion Coropcean, and a number of chairmen of veterans organizations, IPN reports.

The organizational committee, in cooperation with the public authorities, will take measures to lay out the graves and to restore the monuments to killed soldiers, will organize meetings with Afghan war veterans in military units and education institutions and will contribute to the solving of social problems of invalids and families of military men killed in battle.

Financial assistance will be distributed to invalids and families of soldiers killed in the line of duty from the national social support fund, through the agency of the local funds.

As many as 10,000 Moldovans fought in Afghanistan. 301 soldiers were killed, four went missing, while 500 were injured.
