President Nicolae Timofti promulgated the law to amend and complement legal acts on tobacco control. The law will take effect when it is published in the Official Gazette, but some of its provisions will take effect next year, IPN reports.

Under the legal provisions that are to come into force gradually, smoking in closed and semi-closed areas will not be allowed and any form of support for activities by the tobacco industry will be banned. Any form of sale of cigarettes to minors will be excluded and online selling will be banned. The sale of cigarettes with aromas will also be banned. The producers are obliged to publish warnings about the danger of smoking, accompanied by pictograms, on the packs of cigarettes.

The law bans smoking in public transport stations and at a distance of 10 meters from this, on stadiums and arenas during events. Any voluntary contribution of the tobacco industry to different activities and advertising of tobacco articles is banned. The visible display of tobacco products will be penalized.

During many years, representatives of civil society insisted that the authorities should adopt the anti-tobacco law. Recently, they made a call to the head of state, asking that he should not yield to the pressure exerted by those who can be lobbying for the tobacco industry.
