Reforms must be continued and in times such as these Moldova needs solidarity, stated Nicolae Timofti in his speech during the inaugural session of the 20th Moldovan Parliament today. “There is still a lot to be done, but it is in our power to make Moldova join the lot of civilized countries”, the President told the MPs.
Nicolae Timofti said that the citizens should feel that the exercise of authority is done on their behalf and in their interest. “Now you need to identify the optimal political approaches to continue modernizing the country. Economic growth and progresses in other key areas depend on the Government that you will appoint. With Moldova going through extremely responsible times, given the domestic and regional political context, pressing ahead with reforms is crucial. Processes of modernization must be stepped up so as to bring our country closer to the European Union's standards of democracy and of living”, Nicolae Timofti told the MPs.
The President also thanked the previous Parliament. “The most important achievement of the previous Parliament was that it managed to bring the country closer to Europe.”
“Further, without anticipating the agenda that you are to establish for this Parliament, let me draw your attention to the need to modernize the Constitution or even adopt a new one. The updated act should contain modern and fair approaches to electing the head of state, the Prosecutor and others, in line with the imperatives of our time”, stated Nicolae Timofti.
The President added that the people expects laws that can bring about positive change in key areas such as health care, agriculture or social insurance, and needs programs that can reduce inequity.
