The situation in the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine is very serious and directly affects the Republic of Moldova, the leaders of the Pro-European Coalition said in a joint news conference on March 12, quoted by IPN.

PLDM leader Vlad Filat said the events in Crimea represent direct interference by Russia in the internal and sovereign affairs of Ukraine. “We must admit that the developments in Ukraine affect us in the most direct way possibly. A different kind of weapon is used against Moldova. We see many so-called patriots of Moldova who in fact struggle against the country,” he stated.

As to U.S. Senator John McCain’s statement that Moldova can get rid of Russia’s threats if it joins NATO, Vlad Filat said this issue is not in the political agenda of the government. Moldova remains a neutral state that has partnership relations with NATO and takes part in different peacekeeping missions.

The leader of the PDM Marian Lupu said the best solution for Moldova is to strengthen its status of neutrality, especially because the country faces an unsolved conflict in the Transnistrian region.

The leader of the PLR Ion Hadarca said that Moldova should be vigilant given the developments in the neighboring country. “We want to believe that things will go peacefully and an optimal solution will be found to ensure political stability in the region,” stated the MP, adding that the PLR generally supports the idea of joining NATO, especially in the context of the new geopolitical events, but the Constitution of Moldova must be amended in this respect.
