The problem of waste is very serious in Moldova’s communities. Waste is stored everywhere, less in authorized places, and becomes thus a ticking bomb. Regrettably, the problem is devoted not enough attention, while the local public authorities have insufficient instruments for changing the situation. The statement was made by the mayor of Banesti of Telenesti district Vasile Popovici.

In a news conference at IPN, the mayor said that when the waste decays, noxious substances penetrate the underground waters and the water is later drunk by animals and humans. He, together with another three mayors, of Verejeni, Ratus and Chitcanii Vechi villages of Nisporeni district, applied to a project of decentralized cooperation with the French waste collection company Savoie Déchets.

The project envisions the examination of the waste situation and raising of the population’s awareness of the necessity of consciously collecting waste. A probationer proposed by the mayor’s offices of the involved villages will go to France to see how the waste is managed there. A biodegradable waste composting station that will be built in 2019 will serve the four villages.

Alexandru Taburceanu, mayor of Chitcanii Vechi, said ecological culture should be promoted among the people so that these do not throw waste everywhere. “We hope that concrete steps will be taken in 2019 and we will closely cooperate in this regard so as to do something good for our communities,“ he stated.

Stefan Birca, mayor of Verejeni, said in his village they insisted that all the unauthorized waste dumps should be liquidated and only the authorized landfill should remain. Waste management in villages leaves to be desired for a number of reasons, including financial ones. The mayor welcomed the creation of a platform for collecting, sorting and compositing waste.

Mayor of Ratus Tudor Turcanu said the implementation of the project will enable to manage and process the waste that has been stored for many years and the health of the people living in the area will improve as a result.

Savoie Déchets director Pierre Tournier explained that the waste composting station will process biodegradable waste, while the rest of waste, such as glass and plastic, will be sold. A sum of 30,000 was allocated at the first stage. Another budget will be approved for the next year, depending on the evolution of the project.

The project is implemented by Savoie Déchets with the support of the Embassy of France in Chisinau.
