The propagandistic news and feature programs could be removed from the broadcast schedule of some of the TV channels, if amendments are made to the Broadcasting Code. The issue was developed in the program “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.
Democratic MP Sergiu Sarbu said that if the new changes to the Broadcasting Code are adopted, the Broadcasting Coordination Council will be obliged to penalize the TV channels that transmit or retransmit propagandistic news and programs. “We do not intend to close TV channels. Only the political and military news and programs will be removed. The popular recreational programs will remain,” stated Sergiu Sarbu. He voiced hope that the changes will be passed during the current session of Parliament.
Executive director of the Association of Independent Press Petru Macovei said it is the obligation of the state to take measures to support those who produce national content of a high quality. The provision of fiscal benefits could be one of these measures. There are TV channels that have few or not at all national content. Other channels broadcast less than six hours of national content, but the legislation stipulates a quota of at least eight hours.
Historian Octavian Tacu said he does not believe in the functionality of the current government and any of the emanations of this is just a smokescreen. The Democratic Party controls Parliament and it is not clear what hinders it from creating a functional Broadcasting Coordination Council when there is a supreme legislative body.
