The probation advisers of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions commit violations when monitoring the execution of the suspended sentences, the Prosecutor General’s Office has said in a communiqué. According to prosecutors, the identified irregularities show the probation advisers do not fulfill their duties and there is no control over the work done by them, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, more than 7,000 convicts were put on probation last year. 3,000 of them served suspended sentences. The law says the probation advisers must arrange meetings with the convicts within five workdays of the day the court passes judgment, but they ignore this task. Such cases were identified in the districts of Calarasi, Ialoveni and Ciadar-Lunga. The prosecutors also said that some of the probation advisers only verify in court if the beneficiaries were penalized administratively during the probation period, even if they are obliged to inquiry about the offenses committed by convicts at police commissariats at least once a month. In some of the cases, the advisers verify in an inappropriate way the information about the commission of offenses by the convicts during the probation period. There were identified cases when the convicts put on probation, who are banned from changing the place of residence without the approval of the inspection body, are not visited at home to see if they did not leave. It was established that convicts left Moldova for a certain period while under probation. The prosecutors also established that sometimes the probation advisers do not draw up reports when the convicts are no more under supervision and do not inform the court about the end of the supervision procedures within five days. The Prosecutor General’s Office informed the Ministry of Justice about the identified violations, asking that action is taken to deal with them.
