The prosecutors demand amending the legislation so as to impose more severe punishments on inebriated drivers. 15% of the offenses recorded last year were drunk-driving related offenses, Deputy Prosecutor General Igor Serbinov said in a meeting centering on last year’s work of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to Igor Serbinov, harsher penalties are needed for drunk-driving. Currently, the inebriated drivers are fined, but not deprived of the right to drive a unit of transport.
Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubco said the proposal to toughen up the punishments will be submitted to the legislative body for consideration.
In 2010, there were examined 1,281 legal cases opened against persons caught driving under the influence.
