A group of protesters picketed today, June 25, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO), seeking the resignation of Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin and the reformation and de-politicization of the institution. The protesters demanded that the prosecutor general should be held disciplinarily and criminally accountable for doing nothing to prevent the sealing of money from the banking sector, IPN reports.

“We came to demand that the Prosecutor General’s Office should take concrete steps to investigate the ‘theft of the century’ and that Mister Gurin should resign because he showed incompetence and didn’t fulfill his duties. He thus should be held accountable disciplinarily and criminally too. We want to remind this institution that the real thieves are in Moldova’s Parliament and a firm attitude is needed for the thieves involved in the ‘theft of the century’ to be punished. If these are not punished, we will continue the protests,” stated civic activist Dinu Plangau.

Activist Liviu Vovc accused the PGO of promoting the interests of a group of oligarchs. “We want those to blame in the case of Banca de Economii to be jailed. They should not sit in Parliament. We want Gurin, who admitted that he knew that Banca de Economii was being robbed, should tender his resignation or the Supreme Council of Persecutors should dismiss him and name an independent prosecutor in his place,” he stated.

Inga Grigoriu said they want the PGO to take attitude and fulfill its duties. “We are citizens of Moldova and consider that the Prosecutor General’s Office does not fulfill its duties. It does not start criminal cases against those who robbed the country, especially against those who stole billions in lei and in other currency, causing considerable damage to the state,” said the young woman.

The protesters signed an open letter with demands and left it at the PGO. After the protest, the participants went on a march to the head office of the National Bank, which they intend to picket next week.
