The Party of Socialists (PSRM) and representatives of civil society announce a broad program of events and a march that will involve tens of thousands of people on the occasion of May 9, when it is celebrated the victory in World War II. The Socialists’ leader Igor Dodon, in a news conference at IPN, said that nobody should politicize the Victory Day. Therefore, all the events will be apolitical in character and no party flags will be brought to these.
Igor Dodon said that in anticipation of May 9, members and sympathizers of the party worked to restore a number of monuments that symbolize victory over fascism. These visited practically each World War II veteran to help them do housework. Starting at 9am on May 9, the participants in the march will come together in the square of the National Opera House and will then march to the memorial complex “Eternity” at 10am.
According to the leader of the Party of Socialists, given that Low Sunday is observed also on May 9, the march will be mounted in the first half of the day so that the people could go to cemeteries afterward. The Socialists will do their utmost to prevent NATO and U.S. military vehicles from coming to Chisinau on May 9 to take part in an exhibition in the center of the city. “If the U.S. soldiers want to take part in the march, they can do it, but without vehicles and guns,” stated Igor Dodon.
MP Marina Radvan, who heads the youth organization “Youth Guard”, said the even “Undying regiment” that will be staged in Moldova within the march for the first time has been held in many countries during many years. “The idea is to bring photos of World War II heroes to the event to show that the memory is living,” she stated.
Veteran Valentina Piatenco related several memories of the period of World War II, saying she was sent to fight near Stalingrad immediately after she completed her vocational education. She was the only one who survived after her regiment was subject to attacks. For her, the war ended in September 1945 because there were Nazis who continued to fight after the aggressor countries capitulated.
Nicolae Pascaru, leader of the youth organization “Voievod”, said the May 9 march must involve all the Moldovans as those who struggled against fascism must be remembered. He called on everyone, regardless of nationality, to unite and take part in this event so as to show that such tragedies as World War II must not repeat.
