The citizens are invited to a public debate centering on the correctitude of the spoken language entitled “Celebration of the language between fetish and relativization”. This will be held in the central park of Chisinau on the Romanian Language Day on August 31, starting at 11am, IPN has learned from the organizers.

The discussions will involve Mircea V. Ciobanu, Iraida Condrea, Dumitru Crudu, Constantin Schiopu and Tamara Caraus.

The speakers will answer such questions as: Why do we celebrate the language once a year and speak it as usual during the rest of the time; Is the celebration of the language by poems, odes, melodies a festishization of the language to hide the normative character, in parts oppressive, of the correct language; How can we avoid the fetishization of language by avoiding relativism and can the language in rural areas or urban ones be a would-be authentic language?

These and other questions are to be addressed in the discussion on the correct speech and celebration of the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova, based on the book “Paper tongue” by Tamara Caraus.

“If we admit that the language is a system of rules and conventions that we should know and respect, we will make a fetish of the language. We will praise it and will tell odes and poems to it, will celebrate it on particular days. During the rest of the time, we will speak it as always, with piety, some correctly, while others not so correctly. The celebration of the language is a celebration of the language Zeus for this to forgive the mistakes we made during a year so that we could make new mistakes later,” the author of the books said in the preface.
