The public service obligation for Moldovagaz as a gas supplier of last resort has been extended for another year. A decision in this regard was taken by the Board of Directors of the National Agency for Energy Regulation, IPN reports.

According to the Agency, this decision was taken in the context in which the competitive selection procedure for a new supplier of last resort has not ended, due to the lack of interest from suppliers active on the gas market.

“In order to protect the rights of final consumers who have lost their natural gas supplier, the NAER decided to extend the deadline for the execution of the last-resort supply obligation by Moldovagaz throughout the territory of the Republic of Moldova, until October 12, 2025. Thus, the affected consumers will continue to benefit from natural gas at regulated prices,” reads a press release.

According to the legal provisions, the natural gas supplier that provides the last-resort public service has the obligation to ensure, on the indicated territory and from the date indicated by the NAER, the continuity of the uninterrupted supply of gas to consumers who lost their supplier, for a period of up to four months. It is also obliged to make the contract available to the final consumer in written form, within no more than eight calendar days from the date of the start of the last-resort supply. Another obligation is to deliver gas in the context of the public service obligation to supply gas at regulated, reasonable, transparent, non-discriminatory and easily comparable prices, approved by the Agency.

According to data from the National Agency for Energy Regulation, the number of final consumers who will benefit from the supply of natural gas in the context of the public service obligation can vary between 1 and 825,179 consumers, depending on the individual situation of the supplier that is unable to supply natural gas to its consumers. The volume of gas consumed by them in four months, according to last year statistics, can vary from 1 to 436.5 million cubic meters.
