The number of cases, the incidence and death rates from cardiovascular diseases have been rated as “stably high”. However, there is a slight downward trend in the mortality rate, which dropped from 676 cases per 100,000 population in 2007 to 617.5 in 2016.

As the world marks the Heart Day today, the National Public Health Center is warning that CVDs remain a leading cause of death.

The top killers among the CVDs are ischemic cardiomyopathy (51%), cerbrovascular diseases (25.8%), myocardial infractions (9.1%), and hypertensive cardiomyopathy (9.6%).

According to the World Health Organization, CVDs kill 17.7 million people each year, with the number expected to rise to 23 million deaths by 2030.

To maintain a healthy heart, doctors recommend active lifestyles. As little as 30 minutes of exercise per day can dramatically reduce the risks of a heart attack or stroke. It is also advised to avoid smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke. Quitting smoking halves the risk of a coronary disease within a year.

Eating a healthy diet is also crucial, with doctors recommending fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish, peas and beans. Also, avoid alcohol excess.
