Fishermen and children are the categories who run the risk of falling under ice on lakes. The General Inspectorate for Emergencies warns that the ice on the national likes is at most 5 cm thick and walking on it is dangerous, IPN reports.

In a news conference, capitation Dumitru Vieru, of the Inspectorate, said walking on ice is allowed when this is over 8 cm thick. Then the ice is green-blue in color. The children must always be accompanied by adults. If there are groups of persons, the thickness of the ice should be at least 15 cm. Skating is safe when the ice is 25 cm thick.

Given the tradition typical of Epiphany, the rescuers warn to enter the icy water in small groups and slowly so as to avoid damaging the layer of ice or falling under it. When going out, the persons should wrap themselves warm.

The Inspectorate set up mobile groups that work all over the country and are ready to intervene in emergencies. Nineteen rescue stations have specially laid out places for diving in icy water on Epiphany.
