Price rises, absence of jobs, labor migration and exaggerated bureaucracy are the most serious problems faced by the inhabitants of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. The people are also dissatisfied with corruption and poverty, shows an opinion poll carried out by the Association “Piligrim-Demo”. In a news conference at IPN, the Association’s executive director Mihail Sirkeli said that in general the region’s residents are dissatisfied with the current state of affairs in Gagauzia.

According to him, the survey revealed that most of the respondents do not understand how the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia works and how it influences people’ lives. Those interviewed negatively assessed the work of this body and noted the lack of noticeable results. Also, some of the respondents consider that the deputies of the People’s Assembly aim mainly to satisfy the own interests.

The people are not satisfied with the work of deputies. They consider that these do not sufficiently communicate with the people. They perceive the deputies as people with relations, who have their own interests and promote these in the People’s Assembly, stated Mihail Sirkeli. According to him, the future deputies must take these observations into account and propose models for developing Gagauzia, in general, and the communities that form part of it.

The poll shows the people’s level of information about the results achieved by the People’s Assembly in its work is low. Those who live in urban areas are better informed and possess the information that is actively disseminated by the media, while those from rural areas are less informed.

The people do not think that the next elections to choose members of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia that will take place on November 20 will differ much from the previous ones in terms of turnout and of pre-electoral technologies. “The expectations of the region’s inhabitants of the sixth legislature of the People’s Assembly are related to the resolution of the existent problems such as employment, salaries, business development, interaction with the other bodies of the local, regional and national authorities,” said Mihail Sirkeli.

The survey conducted by “Piligrim-Demo” with the assistance of the United States covered a sample of 70 people from rural and urban areas, men and women aged between 19 and 63.
