Romanians in Moldova can take part in referendum to review Constitution of Romania

Romanian citizens who have the domicile or residence in the Republic of Moldova on October 6 and 7 are expected to the 35 polling places established all over the country to take part in the referendum on the revision of the Constitution of Romania. Polling places will work from 7am until 9pm, IPN reports.

At the referendum, the voters will answer with “YES” or “NO” the following question: “Do you agree with the law to review the Constitution of Romania in the form in which it was adopted by Parliament?” . The law to review the Constitution of Romania adopted by Romanian’s Parliament provides that Article 48, paragraph (1) of Romania’s Constitution will have the following content: “The family is based on a freely decided marriage between a man and a woman, on their equality in rights and on parents’ rights to ensure the growing, education and training of children”. Now the article stipulates that: “The family is based on a freely decided marriage between spouses”.

In a news conference, Romania’s Ambassador in Chisinau Daniel Ioniță said the Embassy recommends the Romanian citizens who are on Moldova’s territory to make sure they have valid identification papers in the referendum days or they will be unable to vote. Those who lost the papers or these are expired should apply to the consular sections or in Romania to have these changed beforehand.

To take part in the referendum, the voters should be aged 18 and over. The Romanian citizens with the domicile in Romania, who will be abroad on the referendum days, and the Romanian citizens with the domicile or residence in the Republic of Moldova can vote at the polling places established abroad with the following papers: identity card; temporary identity card; electronic identity card, diplomatic passport; electronic diplomatic passport; service passport; electronic service passport; simple passport and electronic simple passport; temporary simple passport and simple passport showing the place of domicile, electronic simple passport showing the place of domicile and the temporary simple passport showing the place of domicile.

At the polling places abroad, mobile ballot boxes and permanent voter rolls cannot be used. All the voters will be put on temporary electoral registers. Each voter casts the ballot in person. Multiple voting and voting instead of another person are banned. Any control over the method of voting by a person is not allowed.

The press and international observers can ask for accreditation from the permanent electoral authorities by the end of October 2.
