The Romanian citizens in Moldova should understand that the upcoming European Parliament elections are about their future as well. Romania and the Republic of Moldova have a common destiny in the European Union. Even if Moldova does not form part of the EU, Romania will be an advocate of the European integration, Romanian MP Matei-Adrian Dobrovie was quoted by IPN as saying in a program on TVR Moldova channel.
According to him, the Europeanization of society in Moldova in practical terms means viable institutions, functional justice, fight against corruption, respected democratic standards. “These elections have a stake for the Republic of Moldova too,” stated Matei-Adrian Dobrovie, noting the party he represents will do its best for Moldova not to be ignored and be supported through conditionality elements for releasing financing.
Ion Tăbârță, expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul”, said the EP elections are important for Moldova as well as the EU’s approach to the neighboring countries and the partners that are not members of the European community will depend on the configuration in the European Parliament. “That’s why a European Parliament that will be more attentive and more preoccupied with the neighborhood problems and such countries like the Republic of Moldova in particular situations will be an aid for our state. At the same time, we should understand that no matter what color the European Parliament has and what the EU’s development strategy towards its neighbors is, everything depends on what we do here,” stated the expert.
According to him, the future European Parliament could be less predisposed towards the Republic of Moldova. If Moldova does not implement the Association Agreement, its relationship with the EU will stagnate and will not develop in the direction wanted by the citizens.
The elections to the European Parliament will take place this Sunday, May 26. A number of 36 polling stations for the Moldovans with Romanian nationality to cast their ballots will be established in Moldova.
