Over 8,000 people are waiting for a cataract surgery on waiting lists compiled during the last ten years. Minister of Health, Labor and Social Protection Silvia Radu said the waiting lists are created artificially as the health system has an intervention capacity that is three times larger than the annual necessities, IPN reports.
In a news conference on December 20, the minister said the number of persons registered during a year for cataract and endoprosthesis operations does not exceed 1,000. At the same time, the capacity calculated in concert with the medical institutions that are ready to intervene is of 3,000 operations. The data show that there should be no rows. Silvia Radu assured the problem will be solved as soon as possible.
The waiting lists for cataract and endoprosthesis operations have been already reviewed and the number of surgeries was increased. The goal next year is to perform at least 3,000 endoprosthesis operations.
The Ministry also aims to fully digitize the whole medical system and to finalize the concept for modernizing and reforming the hospital sector by external examinations and public consultations. The working out of the mother and child health strategy for 2020-2030 and the creation of the national network for coordinating and taking organs and tissues are also among the priorities.
As regards the dialysis service, Silvia Radu said there are over 2,000 patients who need this. Currently, the needs are only 20% covered. As the necessary equipment is very costly, public-private partnerships will be established for the purpose.
