The 93-kilometer Sarateni-Soroca road section reconstructed as part of the United States’ $262 million Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact program was opened officially. The road crosses 14 settlements in the districts Telenesti, Floresti and Soroca.
Besides the reconstruction of the road, the project to the value of US$120 million included the repair and construction of 14 bridges, building of pavements, drainage channels and bus stations and lighting of the road through settlements. There was also constructed the first interchange in the last two decades, IPN reports, quoting the Government’s press service.
“A modern road offers the people not only convenience, but also the possibility of travelling faster and cheaper. It is a stimulus to remain in the native village and to start a business, creating thus jobs,” Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said in the inauguration of the road.
U.S. Ambassador William H. Moser said it was a pleasure for him to show to everyone that roads of a high quality can be built in Moldova too.
The contract with the Millennium Challenge Corporation was signed in 2010 by Iurie Leanca, when he held the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, within a visit paid to Washington, together with Vlad Filat, who was then Prime Minister.
