Searches are being carried out in all the sectors of Penitentiary No. 6 in Soroca. The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said the operation is a follow-up to the investigation measures taken in the case concerning the criminal organization that worked outside and inside penitentiaries, IPN reports.
According to the institution, as in the case of the searches that were conducted at Penitentiary No. 15 in Cricova on February 24, the operation is carried out with the assistance of the Special Detachment “Pantera”, while the Special Police Brigade “Fulger” is ensuring security outside Penitentiary No. 6.
On February 15, the deputy head of the National Administration of Penitentiaries Sergey Demchenko was arrested for 72 hours. Searches were carried out at his home, office and in his car.
On February 24, searches were conducted at Penitentiary No. 15 in Cricova within the case featuring Demchenko. He is suspected of abuse of power in the interests of a criminal organization and faces three to eight years in jail and ban on holding particular posts or performing particular activities for a period of 10 to 15 years.
It was also decided to transfer 13 convicts from the Cricova Penitentiary to other jails. The 13 prisoners are suspected of having high hierarchical statuses in the criminal underworld.
