The second contingent of the National Army to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon returned to the Republic of Moldova after a successful mission. The servicemen were welcomed on Wednesday at the Ministry of Defense by an official ceremony, being conferred awards and diplomas, IPN reports.
Captain Nicolae Tinevschi, commander of the UNIFIL-2 National Army contingent, said that during the seven-month international peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, the contingent made every effort to fulfill the tasks set for the group of Moldovan peacekeepers. The professional soldiers, including three women, ensured the security and guarded strategic facilities and patrolled the area of responsibility.
“Despite the fact that the security situation has escalated in the Middle East, we, the 32 peacekeepers, had the honor to represent the Republic of Moldova and the National Army under the aegis of the UN. I want to thank our partners for their support in our training, preparation and detachment to the peacekeeping mission under the auspices of the UN. At the same time, I want to thank the families for their understanding and patience,” stated Captain Nicolae Tienvschi.
Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatyi said that the National Army has servicemembers of all categories – soldiers, sergeants, officers – men and women who were well trained to fulfill the country’s defense mission, to fulfill international peacekeeping missions. According to the official, peace must be defended.
“Our efforts to transform and modernize the army, invest in the training of the National Army servicemen contribute significantly to maintaining peace and security, not only at home, but also in the world,” stated the minister.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon was established to confirm Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, restore international peace and security, and assist the Government of Lebanon in restoring its effective authority in the area. At the request of the Government of Lebanon, the UNIFIL mandate is renewed annually by the Security Council. The decision to participate in UNIFIL was approved by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in November 2021. The first four servicemen of the National Army were detached to Lebanon in August 2022.
