A group of Moldovan doctors and Romanian surgeon Irinel Popescu performed the second liver transplant in Chisinau on June 7. The operation at the National Clinical Hospital lasted for over six hours.

Transplant Agency director Igor Codreanu has told IPN that the patient was a 28-year-old man who suffered from terminal hepatic cirrhosis. A friend of his donated a part of his liver to him. All the surgery and rehabilitation related costs are covered from the state budget, through the National Transplantation Program for 2012-2014, and from the funds of the National Health Insurance Company.

Igor Codreanu also said that the persons who suffer from terminal hepatic diseases are medically insured by the state. Most of the times, hepatic cirrhosis appears as a result of viral hepatites that are not treated in time or that develop rapidly.

The first liver transplant in Moldova took place on February 22. A young man donated a part of his liver to his mother. The operation was performed by a team of doctors led by former Health Minister Vladimir Hotineanu. They were assisted by Irinel Popescu.
