Sergiu Armasu was dismissed today from the post of head of the Traffic Police by the recently appointed Interior Minister Dorin Recean, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Armasu's successor is Serghei Diaconu, who was introduced to the staff at a meeting today.
Minister Recean stated in a press release that the activity of the Traffic Police needs to be improved.
“Today the Traffic Police is not associated by the general public with an agency that ensures safety on the roads. Instead, corruption is pervasive. There is this reputation of a system that imposes informal punishments and that issues tickets arbitrarily; there are these traffic signs and traffic lights that are used as traps, and there are artificially created conditions for corruption. We firmly believe that not all the police officers are corrupt, therefore the system should not lose its integrity and effectiveness because of those who disrespect the law”, stated Dorin Recean.
He added that the system should encourage honest officers who are doing their jobs wright and whose professionalism meets the expectations of society. “Precisely such officers will be at the foundation of an extensive cleansing of the system”.
“We will implement a road safety system that corresponds to the expectations of the general public. We will remove those practices by the traffic police that inconvenience motorists and affect the reputation of the institution”, stated the Minister.
