Seven persons were charged in the case of the railroad accident that happened in Giurgiulesti on November 4, 2014, when eight cars of a freight train going from Reni to Galati derailed at the entrance to the station. The Prosecutor General’s Office said the investigation into this case was completed and the criminal case was sent to court, IPN reports.
The prosecutors established that the accident happened because the speed regime wasn’t respected and the rails were in an unsatisfactory technical state. There were accused five persons responsible for the technical state of the rails where the accident occurred, including the head and deputy head of the Basarabeasca maintenance section of Moldova’s Railways. Another two persons – the engineer and his assistance who drove the train without adjusting the speed – are accused of violating traffic security and railway transport utilization rules.
To recover the damage caused to Moldova’s Railways, the prosecutors sequestrated property of those accused to the value of 4.7 million lei. The culprits face up to seven years in jail and may be banned from holding particular posts or performing particular activities for a period of up to five years.
